Alfalfa was a crazed sociopath.

I grew up watching syndicated re-packaged Our Gang/Little Rascals shorts on television. They were in black and white, so I've always sort of assumed that they were from the same era as The Munsters and Leave It to Beaver. Wikipedia just informed me that they're actually a product of the 1930s, which makes a little more sense, now that I think about it.

That's not worthy of a Stuff I Found on Wikipedia entry. The fact that the kid who played Alfalfa was a contemptible sociopath is. A lot of people are frequently cited as the quintessential child-star-gone-bad. But can Todd Bridges, Dana Plato, Drew Barrymore, or Danny Bonaduce really compete with Alfalfa and his on-set "pranks" involving switchblades and fishing hooks? He even died at a young age under grisly circumstances.

Carl "Alfalfa" Switzer

NOTE: Time has scrubbed wikipedia of some of the stuff that used to be on this page when I originally read it (though his death is still weird and grisly). Click here for a webpage that still has a more sordid take.

::EDIT:: I don't know how I overlooked this: It's also notable that he was an inspiration to future fellow sociopath Robert Blake.

Bird's nest soup

I remember seeing this on menus in Chinese restaurants when I was younger. My mom told me it was made from actual bird nests, so I naturally stayed away.

I was just thinking about it today, and it occurred to me: This can't really be made out of bird nests, right? I mean, come on! Bird nests?? Where would they get them all? Do people in China climb trees looking for abandoned nests for soup? How are they able to find so many that they can export them all the way to Chinese restaurants in small towns in Indiana? Impossible. Bird's nest soup is probably just a soup made with a "nest" of egg noodles or something, and my mom was simply pulling my leg.

Let's ask Wikipedia!

Wrong. Bird's nest soup IS made from actual bird nests. But they're apparently found in caves, not trees. The nests are made of saliva, which provides an additional element of disgust. They're also extremely expensive, which may have been the main reason my mom discouraged me from ordering it years ago.
